Winter Birds for OM

solo for viola

This is one of several pieces for viola derived from cutting songs about snowflakes into paper snowflakes and then reading them through one another. This piece utilizes the following texts in performance:

in the shadow of the valley of the birds

the spoken voice attracts the people

across winter’s valley

the footprints of Friday

with his characteristic toe, and line

graphs a talismanic future

to the eye of she who resists

although we are colonists

we abandon our positions

as missionaries

and remain afloat

thermal drafts sustaining us

awing among mineral baths

bubbling with genesis

noise and futures

waiting

until the moment that

symmetry is broken
